Check Your Cyber Defenses

Cyber-attack frequency has increased dramatically in the last couple years. Meat processors are a targeted class for these attacks, like the JBS attack. Hackers target meat processors because these are often family-owned businesses that might not have the most advanced cyber defense and disrupting the food supply makes the attack more newsworthy.

Cybersecurity in meat processing is crucial to ensure the protection of sensitive information, such as customer data, financial information, and trade secrets, from cyber-attacks and data breaches. To enhance cyber security, meat processors can take the following steps:

  1. Implement robust passwords and regularly update them
  2. Train employees on cyber security best practices and awareness of potential threats
  3. Install and regularly update anti-virus software and firewalls
  4. Limit access to sensitive information to only those employees who need it
  5. Regularly back up important data and store it off-site
  6. Conduct regular risk assessments and penetration testing
  7. Work with a trusted cyber security expert to ensure all systems are secure

By taking these steps, meat processors can reduce the risk of a cyber security incident and ensure the protection of their valuable assets. You should also check your insurance program to make sure you have a standalone cyber liability insurance policy. Most of the time, the small sub-limits afforded in your standard general liability policy will not be sufficient to protect you in the event of a cyber-attack. It also will not cover the cost to restore your data. Protect your business by taking the above steps to prevent cyber-attacks then add additional protection in the event an attack occurs with a standalone cyber policy.
